• Aciclovir is a nucleoside analogue that is phosphorylated by viral thymidine kinase and subsequently incorporated into viral DNA by DNA polymerase. This incorporation halts DNA chain elongation, thereby inhibiting viral DNA synthesis and preventing replication of herpes simplex virus in infected cells.

Aciclovir cream is generally well tolerated, but local reactions may occur.
