Hurricaïne (Benzocaine)

Hurricaïne is applied directly to the gums or oral mucosa to provide short‑term relief of discomfort caused by a variety of common dental and oral conditions.

• Benzocaine, the active component of Hurricaïne, produces local anesthesia by reversibly binding to voltage‑gated sodium channels on neuronal membranes. This binding stabilizes the inactive state of the channel, preventing the influx of sodium ions that is required for the generation and propagation of action potentials. By blocking nerve impulse conduction in the treated area, the product temporarily eliminates the sensation of pain and discomfort.

Adverse reactions to Hurricaïne are generally uncommon, but they may occur at the site of application or systemically in rare cases.

Common

• Localized burning, stinging, or itching sensation.

When using Hurricaïne, certain precautions help minimize the risk of adverse reactions and ensure safe application.

• Do not apply to broken skin, open wounds, or mucosal lesions larger than a few millimeters.
• Limit the amount to a thin layer; excessive quantities increase systemic absorption.
• Avoid use in infants, young children, or patients with known benzocaine allergy.
• Refrain from applying under occlusive dressings or dental appliances that trap the product.
• Discontinue use and seek medical advice if signs of methemoglobinemia appear.
