Glitisol (Glibenclamide)

Glitisol is indicated for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus when diet, exercise, and other oral agents are insufficient. It is used as part of a comprehensive diabetes care plan.

• Improves glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes.
• Can be combined with metformin or other antidiabetic agents.
• May be used when lifestyle modifications alone do not achieve target glucose levels.

• Severe hypoglycemia leading to loss of consciousness
• Allergic reactions such as angioedema

• Hematologic abnormalities (e.g., leukopenia)

Before starting Glitisol, certain health considerations should be reviewed to ensure safe use.

• Assess renal and hepatic function, as impairment may require dose adjustment.
• Use caution in elderly patients due to increased risk of hypoglycemia.
• Avoid use during pregnancy and lactation unless clearly indicated by a physician.
• Monitor blood glucose regularly to detect hypoglycemia early.
• Patients with a history of cardiovascular disease should be evaluated for risk.
• Discontinue if signs of severe allergic reaction appear.

Glitisol can interact with several medicines, affecting its efficacy or safety profile.

Avoid

• Other sulfonylureas or insulin secretagogues (risk of additive hypoglycemia).
• Strong CYP2C9 inhibitors such as fluconazole or amiodarone (may increase glibenclamide levels).
• MAO inhibitors (potential for enhanced hypoglycemic effect).

Use with caution

• Beta‑blockers (may mask hypoglycemia symptoms).
• Thiazide diuretics (can affect glucose control).
• Anticoagulants like warfarin (possible alteration of INR).
• NSAIDs (may increase risk of renal impairment).
