Gloros (Ferrous Gluconate)

Gloros is indicated for the management and prevention of iron deficiency related conditions.

• Treatment of iron deficiency anemia in adults.
• Prevention of iron deficiency in individuals with increased physiological demand, such as during pregnancy or growth periods.
• Support for patients with chronic blood loss, for example due to gastrointestinal bleeding.
• Adjunct therapy for individuals following bariatric surgery or other conditions that impair iron absorption.
• Use in dietary supplementation when dietary iron intake is insufficient.

Oral ferrous gluconate may be associated with a range of gastrointestinal and systemic effects.

Common

• Nausea or upset stomach.
• Constipation or loose stools.
• Abdominal discomfort or cramping.
• Darkened stools (harmless discoloration).
• Metallic taste in the mouth.

Serious

• Severe allergic reaction (e.g., rash, swelling, difficulty breathing).
• Persistent vomiting or severe abdominal pain.
• Black, tar‑like stools indicating possible gastrointestinal bleeding.
• Signs of iron overload such as fatigue, joint pain, or organ dysfunction.
• Sudden drop in blood pressure (hypotension).

Before using Gloros, consider the following safety points.

• Do not use if you have a known hypersensitivity to ferrous gluconate or any excipients.
• Avoid in conditions of iron overload, such as hereditary hemochromatosis.
• Monitor iron status regularly during prolonged therapy.

Avoid

• Tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics (reduced antibiotic absorption).
• Levothyroxine (thyroid hormone replacement).
• Bisphosphonates used for osteoporosis.
• Antacids containing aluminum, magnesium, or calcium.
• Certain mineral supplements (e.g., zinc, copper) taken simultaneously.

Use with caution

• Vitamin C or ascorbic acid (may increase iron absorption, potentially leading to excess).
• Calcium supplements (may modestly reduce iron uptake).
• Proton pump inhibitors or H2 blockers (alter gastric acidity, affecting absorption).
• Foods rich in phytates or polyphenols (e.g., tea, coffee, whole grains) when taken close to the dose.
• Herbal products such as St. John’s wort, which can affect drug metabolism.
