Glurenorm (Gliquidone)

Glurenorm is indicated for the management of hyperglycaemia in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus when diet, exercise, and other oral agents are insufficient.

• As monotherapy in adults newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes who have not reached glycaemic targets with diet and exercise alone.
• In combination with metformin or other oral antidiabetics to enhance overall glucose lowering.
• As an add‑on when other insulin secretagogues are insufficient.
• For patients preferring a second‑generation sulfonylurea with a reduced hypoglycaemia risk versus first‑generation agents.
• To help achieve individualized HbA1c goals within a broader diabetes care plan.

Glurenorm may cause adverse reactions typical of sulfonylureas. The frequency and severity of side effects vary among individuals.

Common

• Mild hypoglycaemia, especially if meals are skipped or delayed.
• Gastrointestinal discomfort such as nausea, abdominal pain, or diarrhoea.
• Headache or dizziness.
• Weight gain due to increased insulin activity.
• Transient blurred vision.
• Generalised fatigue or weakness.

Serious

• Severe hypoglycaemia leading to loss of consciousness or seizures.
• Allergic reactions including skin rash, urticaria, or angio‑edema.

Before prescribing Glurenorm, clinicians should evaluate patient history and clinical conditions that may increase the risk of adverse outcomes.

• Assess renal and hepatic function; dose adjustment may be required in impairment.
• Use caution in elderly patients due to heightened hypoglycaemia susceptibility.
• Monitor blood glucose regularly, especially during therapy initiation or dose changes.
• Evaluate for a history of cardiovascular disease, as sulfonylureas may affect cardiac ischemic preconditioning.
• Avoid use in patients with known hypersensitivity to gliquidone or other sulfonylureas.
• Consider pregnancy and lactation status; safety data are limited.
• Review concomitant medications that could potentiate hypoglycaemia.

Glurenorm can interact with several drugs that alter glucose metabolism or affect sulfonylurea clearance.

Avoid

• Concurrent use with other insulin secretagogues (e.g., repaglinide, nateglinide) due to additive hypoglycaemia risk.
• Co‑administration with strong CYP2C9 inhibitors (e.g., fluconazole, amiodarone) which may increase gliquidone plasma levels.

Use with caution

• Beta‑blockers, which may mask hypoglycaemia symptoms.
• Thiazide diuretics, which can raise blood glucose.
• Corticosteroids or atypical antipsychotics that may elevate glucose levels.
• Alcohol, which can potentiate hypoglycaemia, especially after a dose of Glurenorm.
