Common side effects are mild and may include local irritation, burning, itching, a temporary change in vaginal odor, watery or milky discharge, and slight abdominal discomfort.

If symptoms persist after completing the recommended treatment, worsen, or if you develop signs of a severe reaction such as rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention promptly.

Barrier methods such as condoms can be used, but it is advisable to avoid spermicidal lubricants during treatment because they may increase irritation.

Topical clotrimazole has limited systemic absorption, but concurrent use of other topical antifungals should be avoided. Systemic azole antifungals (e.g., fluconazole) may increase overall azole exposure and should be used with caution.

Clotrimazole blocks the enzyme lanosterol 14α‑demethylase, preventing the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes, leading to cell death.

Gyno-Canesten can treat individual episodes of uncomplicated candidiasis. For recurrent infections (four or more per year), a healthcare professional should evaluate underlying causes and may recommend a longer‑term regimen.

Bacterial vaginosis requires a different type of treatment. Using an antifungal such as Gyno-Canesten will not address bacterial vaginosis, so a proper diagnosis and appropriate therapy are needed.

Discontinue use immediately and seek emergency medical care if you develop symptoms such as rash, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing.
