Helicid (Omeprazole)

Helicid is indicated for several gastrointestinal disorders where reduction of gastric acidity is required.

• Treatment of confirmed gastric and duodenal ulcers to promote healing and relieve pain.
• Prevention and treatment of stress‑related mucosal damage in critically ill or hospitalized patients.
• Management of gastro‑oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms, including heartburn and acid regurgitation.
• Adjunct therapy in Helicobacter pylori eradication regimens to increase eradication rates.
• Use in patients at risk of acid‑related complications after major surgery or intensive‑care procedures.

Like other proton‑pump inhibitors, Helicid may cause a range of adverse effects, most of which are mild and reversible. Most patients tolerate the medication well, but monitoring is advised for certain reactions.

Common

• Headache
• Diarrhoea or loose stools
• Nausea or mild abdominal discomfort
• Flatulence or bloating
• Dizziness
• Injection site reactions such as erythema or pain

Serious

• Severe allergic reactions including anaphylaxis
• Clostridioides difficile‑associated colitis
• Persistent low magnesium levels (hypomagnesemia) with long‑term use
• Acute interstitial nephritis
• Liver enzyme elevations

Before initiating Helicid, clinicians should evaluate patient history and consider specific safety concerns to minimize risk.

• Assess for known hypersensitivity to omeprazole or other PPIs.
• Use cautiously in patients with severe liver impairment; dose adjustment may be required.
• Monitor magnesium levels during prolonged therapy, especially in the elderly.
• Evaluate the need for long‑term use, as chronic suppression of acid may increase infection risk.
• Consider alternative therapy in patients with a history of Clostridioides difficile infection.
• Avoid concomitant use with drugs that require gastric acidity for absorption unless clinically justified.
• Review renal function periodically if the patient has pre‑existing kidney disease.

Helicid can affect the pharmacokinetics of several medicines; awareness of potential interactions helps ensure safe co‑administration and appropriate monitoring. Clinicians should review patient medication lists before prescribing.

Avoid

• Antiretroviral agents such as atazanavir or nelfinavir.
• Antifungal drugs that require acidic environment (ketoconazole, itraconazole).
• Oral clopidogrel, which may have reduced activation.

Use with caution

• Warfarin, due to possible increase in INR; monitor coagulation.
• Digoxin, as serum levels may rise.
• Methotrexate, especially high‑dose, because renal clearance may be reduced.
