Helpoderm (Betamethasone Dipropionate)

Helpoderm is indicated for the topical management of several inflammatory skin conditions where a potent corticosteroid is required.

• Eczema (including atopic dermatitis)
• Psoriasis plaques
• Contact dermatitis
• Seborrheic dermatitis and other chronic dermatoses
• Lichen planus or other inflammatory skin disorders

Side effects may occur locally at the application site and, rarely, systemically with extensive use.

Common

• Mild burning or stinging sensation
• Transient itching or irritation
• Dryness or flaking of the skin
• Folliculitis or acne‑like eruptions

Serious

• Skin atrophy or thinning
• Development of telangiectasia (visible small blood vessels)
• Secondary bacterial, fungal, or viral infection
• Suppression of the hypothalamic‑pituitary‑adrenal (HPA) axis
• Signs of systemic corticosteroid exposure such as hyperglycemia or Cushingoid appearance

When using Helpoderm, certain precautions should be observed to minimize risks.

• Apply only to the affected area and avoid use on healthy skin, the face, or intertriginous zones unless directed by a clinician.
• Limit duration of therapy according to prescribing information; prolonged use increases risk of skin atrophy.
• Do not use on open wounds, infected lesions, or areas with active viral infections.
• Caution in patients with diabetes, hypertension, or known corticosteroid sensitivity.
• Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should consult a healthcare professional before use.
• Discontinue and seek medical advice if signs of systemic absorption appear (e.g., weight gain, mood changes).

Helpoderm may interact with other topical or systemic agents that affect corticosteroid activity or skin integrity.

Avoid

• Concurrent use of other potent topical corticosteroids on the same site, which can increase systemic absorption.
• Application over occlusive dressings unless specifically prescribed.
• Use with topical calcineurin inhibitors on the same area, as combined immunosuppression may raise infection risk.

Use with caution

• Systemic corticosteroids or oral immunosuppressants, which may augment systemic effects.
• Antifungal or antibacterial creams if the skin is already infected; monitor for worsening infection.
• Phototherapy or UV‑B treatment, as corticosteroids can alter skin response to light.
