Hepan (Heparin Sodium, Dexpanthenol)

Hepan is used topically for conditions where anticoagulant activity and skin barrier support are desired.

• To help prevent clot formation in superficial skin injuries or bruises.
• To support the healing of minor cuts, abrasions, or postoperative skin sites.
• To provide moisture retention and barrier protection in dry or compromised skin.
• To assist in the management of superficial thrombophlebitis where topical therapy is appropriate.
• To aid in the care of skin graft donor sites or areas of epidermolysis.

Adverse reactions to Hepan are generally mild, but serious events can occur rarely.

Common

• Mild skin redness or erythema at the application site.
• Slight itching or pruritus.
• Minor swelling or edema.
• Transient warmth or tingling sensation.

Serious

• Allergic contact dermatitis with blistering.
• Uncontrolled bleeding from the application area.
• Severe skin necrosis or ulceration.
• Systemic anticoagulant effect leading to abnormal clotting times (rare).

When using Hepan, several precautions should be observed to minimize risk.

• Avoid applying to open wounds with active bleeding unless directed by a clinician.
• Do not use on infected skin or areas with known hypersensitivity to heparin or dexpanthenol.
• Keep the product away from eyes, mucous membranes, and the oral cavity.
