Heparizen (Heparin Sodium)

Heparizen is applied to the skin for local anticoagulant effects in various clinical situations. It may be considered when topical management of clot formation or thrombosis risk is desired.

• Prevention of superficial thrombophlebitis after minor surgical procedures
• Management of bruising or hematoma formation on the skin
• Adjunctive therapy for venous stasis ulcers
• Supportive care for patients with localized hypercoagulable states
• Temporary protection of catheter insertion sites against clotting

Heparizen can cause a range of local and systemic reactions, though most are mild when used as directed.

Common

• Mild skin irritation or redness at the application site
• Itching or mild rash
• Minor bruising or discoloration
• Localized swelling
• Dryness or peeling of the skin

Serious

• Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) with swelling of face or throat
• Extensive skin necrosis
• Uncontrolled bleeding from the application area
• Systemic anticoagulation leading to abnormal clotting times
• Hematoma formation in deeper tissues

Before using Heparizen, consider the following safety points to minimize risks.

• Do not apply to broken skin, open wounds, or infected areas
• Avoid use in patients with known heparin hypersensitivity
• Monitor for signs of excessive bleeding, especially if other anticoagulants are used
• Use caution in individuals with clotting disorders or thrombocytopenia
• Keep the product out of reach of children and pets
• Discontinue use and seek medical advice if severe skin reactions develop

Heparizen may interact with other agents that affect blood clotting or skin integrity.

Avoid

• Concurrent use of systemic anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin, direct oral anticoagulants) without medical supervision
• Application together with topical non‑steroidal anti‑inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that increase bleeding risk
