Heparoid (Heparinoid)

Heparoid is indicated for several superficial vascular and skin conditions where local anticoagulation or edema reduction is desired.

• Prevention and treatment of superficial thrombophlebitis.
• Management of bruising, hematomas, and localized swelling.
• Adjunct therapy for minor skin injuries that may develop clot formation.
• Supportive care in conditions with localized inflammation and edema.
• Use as a topical antithrombotic in selected dermatologic procedures.

Heparoid may cause local skin reactions as well as systemic effects if absorbed in significant amounts.

Common

• Mild skin irritation or redness at the application site.
• Itching or mild pruritus.
• Transient warmth or tingling sensation.
• Minor bruising or discoloration.
• Localized swelling that resolves spontaneously.

Serious

• Allergic dermatitis or severe skin rash.
• Unexplained bleeding or bruising beyond the treated area.
• Signs of systemic anticoagulation such as nosebleeds.
• Development of necrotic skin lesions.
• Severe hypersensitivity reactions including angioedema.

When using Heparoid, certain safety considerations should be observed to minimize risk.

• Apply only to intact, non‑infected skin unless directed by a healthcare professional.
• Avoid use on large body surface areas or broken skin without medical supervision.
• Do not combine with other topical anticoagulants unless advised.
• Monitor for signs of excessive bleeding, especially in patients on systemic anticoagulants.
• Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should consult a clinician before use.
• Discontinue if severe skin irritation or allergic reaction occurs.

Heparoid can interact with other agents that affect coagulation or skin integrity.

Avoid

• Concurrent use of systemic anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin, direct oral anticoagulants) without medical guidance.
• Application over areas treated with other topical heparin products.
• Use together with potent corticosteroid creams that may increase skin absorption.

Use with caution

• Non‑steroidal anti‑inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) applied topically.
• Herbal or dietary supplements that have anticoagulant properties (e.g., ginkgo, garlic).
• Patients with known bleeding disorders.
• Individuals with severe liver disease affecting clotting factor synthesis.
