Heritage (Acetylsalicylic Acid)

Heritage is indicated for several common conditions where reduction of pain, fever, or inflammation is desired, as well as for certain cardiovascular uses.

• Relief of mild to moderate pain such as headache, toothache, or musculoskeletal discomfort.
• Reduction of fever associated with viral or bacterial infections.
• Management of inflammatory conditions like arthritis or minor injuries.
• Prevention of platelet aggregation to reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke in appropriate patients.
• Adjunct therapy for acute coronary syndrome under medical supervision.

• Acetylsalicylic acid irreversibly acetylates the cyclooxygenase‑1 (COX‑1) enzyme in platelets and other cells, blocking the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandin H2. This inhibition reduces the synthesis of prostaglandins that mediate pain, fever, and inflammation, and decreases thromboxane A2 production, which impairs platelet aggregation. The effect on COX‑1 persists for the lifespan of the platelet, providing lasting antithrombotic activity and contributes to its cardiovascular benefit.

Heritage may cause adverse reactions, most of which are mild and transient, while rare events can be serious.

Common

• Upset stomach or dyspepsia.

Serious

• Gastrointestinal ulcer or bleeding.
• Severe allergic reactions such as rash, swelling, or anaphylaxis.

• Avoid use in individuals with active peptic ulcer disease or a history of gastrointestinal bleeding.
• Use cautiously in patients with asthma, nasal polyps, or chronic kidney disease.
• Limit use during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester, unless advised by a healthcare professional.
• Discuss with a physician before starting regular therapy for cardiovascular protection.
• Avoid concurrent use with other anticoagulants or antiplatelet agents without medical guidance.

Avoid

• Other NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen) – increased risk of gastrointestinal injury.
