Indications & Clinical Uses

Heritage is indicated for several common conditions where reduction of pain, fever, or inflammation is desired, as well as for certain cardiovascular uses.

  • Relief of mild to moderate pain such as headache, toothache, or musculoskeletal discomfort.
  • Reduction of fever associated with viral or bacterial infections.
  • Management of inflammatory conditions like arthritis or minor injuries.
  • Prevention of platelet aggregation to reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke in appropriate patients.
  • Adjunct therapy for acute coronary syndrome under medical supervision.

How It Works

  • Acetylsalicylic acid irreversibly acetylates the cyclooxygenase‑1 (COX‑1) enzyme in platelets and other cells, blocking the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandin H2. This inhibition reduces the synthesis of prostaglandins that mediate pain, fever, and inflammation, and decreases thromboxane A2 production, which impairs platelet aggregation. The effect on COX‑1 persists for the lifespan of the platelet, providing lasting antithrombotic activity and contributes to its cardiovascular benefit.

Side Effects

Heritage may cause adverse reactions, most of which are mild and transient, while rare events can be serious.

Common

  • Upset stomach or dyspepsia.
  • Nausea or mild vomiting.
  • Heartburn or acid reflux.
  • Minor bruising or prolonged bleeding from cuts.

Serious

  • Gastrointestinal ulcer or bleeding.
  • Severe allergic reactions such as rash, swelling, or anaphylaxis.

Precautions & Warnings

Before using Heritage, consider the following precautions to minimize risks and ensure safe use.

  • Do not use if you have a known allergy to aspirin or other NSAIDs.
  • Avoid use in individuals with active peptic ulcer disease or a history of gastrointestinal bleeding.
  • Use cautiously in patients with asthma, nasal polyps, or chronic kidney disease.
  • Limit use during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester, unless advised by a healthcare professional.
  • Discuss with a physician before starting regular therapy for cardiovascular protection.
  • Avoid concurrent use with other anticoagulants or antiplatelet agents without medical guidance.

Avoid Interactions

Heritage can interact with several medicines; some combinations should be avoided, while others require careful monitoring.

Avoid

  • Other NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen) – increased risk of gastrointestinal injury.
  • Anticoagulants (warfarin, direct oral anticoagulants) – heightened bleeding risk.
  • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) – may potentiate bleeding.

Use with caution

  • Corticosteroids – may exacerbate ulcer formation.
  • Blood pressure–lowering agents – aspirin can reduce antihypertensive efficacy.
  • Methotrexate – aspirin may increase methotrexate toxicity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Heritage is used for mild to moderate pain relief, fever reduction, inflammation management, and as a prophylactic to lower the risk of heart attack or stroke by inhibiting platelet aggregation.

Yes, Heritage is classified as an over‑the‑counter (OTC) product in the European Union and can be purchased without a prescription.

Avoid taking other NSAIDs, anticoagulants, and SSRIs without medical guidance, as these combinations can increase the risk of bleeding.

Occasional moderate alcohol consumption is not contraindicated, but excessive alcohol may increase stomach irritation and bleeding risk.

Because aspirin irreversibly inhibits COX‑1 in platelets, its antiplatelet effect persists for the lifespan of the platelet, typically about 7‑10 days.

Common side effects include upset stomach, nausea, heartburn, and minor bruising or prolonged bleeding from cuts.

It is generally recommended to discontinue aspirin several days before elective surgery to reduce bleeding risk; consult your surgeon for specific guidance.

Aspirin may slightly reduce the effectiveness of some antihypertensive drugs; monitoring blood pressure is advisable when both are used.

Heritage is intended for adult use; dosing for children should be determined by a pediatrician, and many formulations are not recommended for young children.
