Herplexim (Aciclovir)

Herplexim is indicated for the topical treatment of herpes virus infections of the skin and mucous membranes, where it helps to reduce lesion duration and discomfort.

• Herpes simplex labialis (cold sores) on the lips, applied at the first sign of tingling or vesicle formation.
• Genital herpes lesions on external genital skin, used to alleviate pain and accelerate crust formation.
• Localized herpes zoster (shingles) lesions when applied to the affected dermatome, aiming to shorten the erythematous phase.
• Post‑herpetic erythema or crusting to promote healing and limit secondary bacterial infection.
• Prevention of viral spread to adjacent skin areas by applying a thin film over the lesion margin.

• Aciclovir, the active component of Herplexim, is a nucleoside analogue that mimics guanosine. After cellular uptake, viral thymidine kinase phosphorylates aciclovir to aciclovir monophosphate, which is then converted by cellular kinases to the active triphosphate form. Aciclovir triphosphate competitively inhibits viral DNA polymerase and becomes incorporated into viral DNA, causing premature chain termination and preventing replication of herpes simplex and varicella‑zoster viruses.

Topical application of Herplexim may be associated with local skin reactions; most are mild and self‑limiting, while rare events can be more concerning and may require medical evaluation.

Common

• Mild burning or stinging sensation that usually resolves within minutes.
• Transient redness or erythema localized to the area of application.
• Slight itching or pruritus without spreading beyond the treated site.
• Dryness, flaking or mild scaling of the skin where the cream is applied.

Serious

• Severe allergic dermatitis presenting with swelling, blistering, or intense redness.
• Contact urticaria or a widespread rash indicating systemic hypersensitivity.
• Secondary bacterial infection of the lesion, evidenced by pus or increasing pain.
• Persistent ulceration, necrosis, or tissue breakdown at the application site.

When using Herplexim, certain precautions help minimize adverse reactions and ensure safe application.

• Avoid applying to intact, non‑lesional skin or mucous membranes.
• Do not use on eyes, ears, or genital mucosa unless directed by a healthcare professional.
• Discontinue use and seek medical advice if a severe skin reaction develops.
• Keep the product out of reach of children; accidental ingestion should be avoided.
• Store at room temperature away from direct sunlight and moisture.
• Consult a physician before use in individuals with known hypersensitivity to aciclovir or related antivirals.

Herplexim is applied locally, so systemic drug‑drug interactions are uncommon, yet certain substances can affect its safety or effectiveness when used together on the skin.

Avoid
