Herpolips (Aciclovir)

Herpolips is indicated for the topical management of several herpes virus skin conditions. It is used to reduce symptoms and accelerate healing of lesions caused by herpes simplex and varicella‑zoster viruses.

• Herpes labialis (cold sores) on the lips or perioral skin.
• Genital herpes lesions on external genitalia or perianal area.
• Herpes zoster (shingles) lesions when applied to localized skin eruptions.
• Early treatment of minor outbreaks to limit lesion size and duration.
• Adjunctive use on mucocutaneous lesions to support comfort and healing.

• Aciclovir is a nucleoside analogue that, after cellular uptake, is phosphorylated by viral thymidine kinase to aciclovir monophosphate, then further converted by host kinases to the active triphosphate. The triphosphate competitively inhibits viral DNA polymerase and becomes incorporated into viral DNA, causing premature chain termination and preventing replication of herpes simplex and varicella‑zoster viruses. Because activation depends on viral enzymes, the drug preferentially accumulates in infected cells, sparing healthy tissue.

Topical aciclovir may cause local skin reactions, most of which are mild, transient, and resolve without medical intervention.

Common

• Mild burning or stinging sensation at the application site.
• Transient itching or mild erythema.
• Dryness or peeling of the treated skin.
• Mild redness or slight swelling around the application area.
• Temporary tingling or numbness that resolves quickly.
• Occasional mild discoloration of the skin that typically fades over days.

Serious

• Allergic contact dermatitis with swelling, rash, or vesicles.
• Severe skin irritation or ulceration at the site.
• Rare systemic hypersensitivity reactions such as fever or malaise.
• Contact urticaria with hives developing near the treated region.

When using Herpolips, certain precautions help ensure safe and effective application.

• Avoid applying to broken skin, open wounds, or mucous membranes unless directed.
• Do not use on healthy skin without lesions; the medication is intended for active herpes lesions.
• Keep the product out of eyes; if accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
• Store at room temperature, protected from moisture and direct sunlight.
• Discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional if a rash or severe irritation develops.
• Keep out of reach of children; accidental ingestion may cause systemic effects.
• Do not combine with other topical antivirals without medical advice.

Topical aciclovir has limited systemic absorption, but certain substances may affect its safety or efficacy when used together on the skin.

Avoid

• Concurrent use of other topical antiviral creams unless prescribed, as overlapping ingredients may increase irritation.
• Application over areas treated with chemical peels or laser therapy, which can enhance skin sensitivity.

Use with caution

• Topical corticosteroids applied before or after aciclovir, which may mask local reactions.
• Products containing alcohol or strong fragrances that could exacerbate dryness or irritation.
• Systemic antiviral therapy (e.g., oral aciclovir) where combined use may not provide additional benefit and could increase systemic exposure.
