Herponil (Etofenamate)

Herponil is indicated for the topical management of several common musculoskeletal complaints, providing localized symptom relief.

• Relief of mild to moderate musculoskeletal pain such as joint or muscle aches.
• Treatment of acute sprains and strains affecting the ankle, knee, wrist or other joints.
• Management of chronic low‑back pain where systemic NSAIDs are not preferred.
• Adjunct therapy for osteoarthritis symptoms in peripheral joints like the knee or hand.
• Supportive care for tendonitis or bursitis to reduce local inflammation.

• Etofenamate exerts its anti‑inflammatory and analgesic effects by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX‑1 and COX‑2) enzymes in peripheral tissues. This inhibition reduces the synthesis of prostaglandins, which are mediators that amplify inflammation, pain, and fever. When applied to the skin, the drug penetrates the underlying tissues, delivering a localized reduction in prostaglandin production and thereby decreasing the inflammatory response at the site of application.

Topical etofenamate may cause local or systemic adverse reactions, although most are mild and reversible.

Common

• Skin irritation, redness or itching at the application site.
• Burning or stinging sensation shortly after application.
• Dryness or peeling of the treated skin.
• Mild local swelling.

Serious

• Allergic contact dermatitis with widespread rash or blistering.
• Severe skin necrosis or ulceration at the site.
• Systemic NSAID reactions such as gastrointestinal upset, headache, or dizziness.
• Rare hypersensitivity reactions including angioedema.
