Hexacima (Haemophilus Influenzae Type B Polysaccharide (Polyribosylribitol Phosphate), Diphtheria Toxoid, Teta)

Hexacima is indicated for active immunization against three bacterial diseases.

• Prevention of invasive Haemophilus influenzae type b disease, including meningitis, pneumonia, and epiglottitis.
• Prevention of diphtheria caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae, reducing risk of severe respiratory illness.
• Prevention of tetanus (lockjaw) resulting from Clostridium tetani toxin exposure.

• Hexacima works by presenting purified polysaccharide from Haemophilus influenzae type b and inactivated toxoids of diphtheria and tetanus to the immune system. These antigens are taken up by antigen‑presenting cells, processed, and displayed to helper T cells, which stimulate B‑cell differentiation and production of specific IgG antibodies. The resulting antibodies neutralize the Hib capsule, diphtheria toxin, and tetanus toxin, providing protective immunity.

Local and systemic reactions may occur after Hexacima administration, most of which are mild and transient.

Common

• Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site.
• Low‑grade fever within 24 hours.
• Mild fatigue or irritability.
• Headache or mild muscle aches.
• Mild rash or hives away from the injection site.
• Temporary loss of appetite.

Serious

• Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) with difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling of the face.
• High fever lasting more than 48 hours.
• Persistent high fever above 40 °C lasting more than 72 hours.
• Neurological symptoms such as seizures or persistent crying in infants.
• Signs of Guillain‑Barré syndrome, including muscle weakness.
• Severe neurologic complications such as encephalopathy.
• Severe local reaction with necrosis.

Healthcare providers should assess patients before administering Hexacima to minimize risks and ensure appropriate use.

• Verify no severe allergic reaction to any component of the vaccine.
• Defer vaccination in individuals with a moderate or severe acute illness.
• Postpone administration to those who have received blood products or immunoglobulins within the previous 3 months.
• Observe the patient for at least 15 minutes after injection for immediate hypersensitivity.
• Counsel caregivers about expected mild reactions and when to seek medical attention.
• Use caution in pregnant or breastfeeding women; benefits should outweigh potential risks.
• Document the lot number and expiration date for traceability.

Hexacima may interact with other vaccines or immunomodulating agents, requiring timing considerations.

Avoid

• Concurrent administration with live attenuated vaccines (e.g., measles, mumps, rubella) without appropriate interval.

Use with caution
