Hexalen (Hexetidine)

Hexalen is indicated for several common oral conditions where reduction of microbial load is desired, and it may be used as an adjunct to routine dental care.

• Hexetidine exerts its antiseptic activity by integrating into microbial cell membranes, causing disruption of membrane integrity and increased permeability. This leads to leakage of intracellular components and inhibition of essential enzymatic processes, resulting in bacteriostatic and fungistatic effects against a broad spectrum of oral flora, including Gram‑positive and Gram‑negative bacteria as well as yeasts. The compound also interferes with microbial adhesion to mucosal surfaces, further limiting colonisation.

Oral application of Hexalen may be associated with a range of local and systemic reactions, most of which are mild and transient, and are usually occasional.

Common

• Transient burning or stinging sensation in the mouth.

• Dry mouth sensation.

Serious

• Systemic hypersensitivity reactions such as rash or urticaria.
• Persistent dysphagia or difficulty breathing.
• Anaphylactic reaction requiring immediate medical attention.

When using Hexalen, certain precautions should be observed to minimise risk and ensure safe use.

• Do not swallow large amounts; the product is intended for topical oral use only.
• Avoid use in individuals with known hypersensitivity to hexetidine or similar antiseptics.
• Keep the medication out of reach of children; accidental ingestion may cause irritation.
• Discontinue use if persistent burning, swelling, or allergic signs develop, and seek medical advice.

Avoid

• Use with alcohol‑based oral rinses, as the combination may cause excessive mucosal dryness.
• Co‑administration with topical corticosteroids for oral lesions; monitor for delayed healing.
