• Hexetidine exerts its antiseptic activity by integrating into microbial cell membranes, disrupting lipid bilayer integrity and increasing permeability. This leads to leakage of intracellular contents and inhibition of essential enzymatic processes, resulting in bacteriostatic and fungistatic effects against a broad range of oral flora, including Gram‑positive and Gram‑negative bacteria as well as yeasts. The membrane disruption also impairs microbial adhesion to mucosal surfaces, further reducing colonization.

Oral antiseptics containing hexetidine may cause local reactions; most are mild, transient, and resolve without intervention, but users should be aware of potential adverse effects.
