Hexomedine (Hexamidine Diisetionate)

Hexomedine is indicated for external antiseptic purposes where microbial control of the skin surface is required.

• Pre‑operative skin preparation before minor surgical or diagnostic procedures.
• Cleansing of superficial cuts, abrasions, and lacerations to reduce infection risk.
• Disinfection of intact skin prior to the insertion of catheters or needles.
• Treatment of mild skin infections such as impetigo or folliculitis.

• Hexamidine diisetionate belongs to the biguanide class of antiseptics. It exerts its antimicrobial effect by interacting with the phospholipid components of microbial cell membranes, causing disruption of membrane integrity. This leads to leakage of intracellular contents, loss of metabolic function and ultimately cell death. The broad‑spectrum activity covers Gram‑positive and Gram‑negative bacteria, as well as certain fungi, viruses and protozoa.

Topical application of Hexomedine may be associated with local skin reactions, most of which are mild and reversible.

Common

• Transient stinging or burning sensation at the application site.
• Mild erythema or redness of the skin.
• Slight itching or pruritus following use.
• Dryness or peeling of the treated area.
• Localized swelling or edema around the treated region.
• Temporary hyperpigmentation that fades over time.

Serious

• Allergic contact dermatitis with vesicle formation.
• Severe skin ulceration or necrosis (rare).

When using Hexomedine, certain precautions should be observed to minimize adverse reactions and ensure safe application.

• Do not apply to broken skin, deep wounds, or mucous membranes.
• Avoid use on patients with known hypersensitivity to biguanide antiseptics.
• Keep the product away from eyes; if accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
• Discontinue use if signs of irritation or allergic reaction develop and consult a healthcare professional.
• Store at room temperature, protected from direct sunlight and moisture.
• Keep out of reach of children; use only as directed on the label.
• Do not use on extensive body areas without medical advice.

Hexomedine may interact with other topical agents or systemic medications, influencing its efficacy or safety.

Avoid
