Hexoral (Hexetidine)

Hexoral is indicated for several common oral conditions where reduction of bacterial or fungal load is desired.

• Management of gingivitis and mild periodontal inflammation
• Relief of sore throat and discomfort associated with pharyngitis
• Treatment of stomatitis and other oral mucosal infections
• Support of routine oral hygiene as an adjunct to brushing and flossing
• Adjunctive care after dental procedures to help maintain a clean oral environment

• Hexetidine exerts its antiseptic activity by integrating into microbial cell membranes, disrupting membrane integrity and increasing permeability. This leads to leakage of intracellular contents and inhibition of essential metabolic processes, resulting in bacteriostatic and fungistatic effects that limit the growth of a broad spectrum of oral bacteria and fungi.

Adverse reactions to Hexoral are generally mild but can vary in severity.

Common

• Unpleasant taste or metallic sensation in the mouth
• Mild oral irritation or burning sensation
• Temporary discoloration of the oral mucosa or teeth
• Nausea or mild gastrointestinal discomfort if swallowed in small amounts

Serious

• Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, or swelling of the lips and tongue
• Angioedema involving the face or throat
• Severe mucosal ulceration or necrosis
• Anaphylactic shock requiring immediate medical attention

Avoid

• Concurrent use with other antiseptic mouthwashes containing alcohol or chlorhexidine, which may increase irritation

Use with caution

• Patients taking anticoagulant therapy, as oral irritation could theoretically increase bleeding risk
• Concurrent use with systemic antibiotics, which may alter oral flora balance
• Use alongside alcohol‑containing oral products, as combined exposure may enhance mucosal dryness
