Hexoral (Hexetidine)

Hexoral is indicated for several common oral conditions where reduction of microbial load is desired.

• Oral mucosal antiseptic for routine hygiene and plaque control.
• Adjunctive treatment of gingivitis to reduce bacterial colonisation.
• Management of stomatitis, including inflammation of the oral mucosa.
• Treatment of oral thrush (candidiasis) caused by fungal overgrowth.
• Relief of minor mouth ulcers and irritation.

• Hexetidine acts as a membrane‑active antiseptic that inserts into microbial cell membranes, disrupting their integrity and increasing permeability. This leads to leakage of intracellular contents and inhibition of essential enzymatic processes, ultimately preventing bacterial and fungal replication and promoting microbial death within the oral cavity.

Adverse reactions to Hexoral are generally mild but can vary in severity.

Common

• Transient metallic or bitter taste in the mouth.
• Mild irritation or burning sensation of oral tissues.
• Temporary discoloration of the tongue or mucosa.

Serious

• Allergic contact dermatitis presenting as redness, swelling, or rash.
• Severe ulceration or erosion of oral mucosa.
• Anaphylactic reaction, characterized by difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, and rapid onset of systemic symptoms.

Before using Hexoral, consider the following safety points.

• Discontinue use if persistent irritation, swelling, or rash develops.
• Use with caution in individuals with known hypersensitivity to hexetidine or similar compounds.
• Avoid swallowing large amounts; rinse thoroughly after use.
• Consult a healthcare professional before use during pregnancy, lactation, or in children when age‑specific data are unavailable.
• Keep the product out of reach of children and store at room temperature, protected from moisture.

Hexoral may interact with other oral products or systemic medications.

Avoid

• Simultaneous use of other alcohol‑based mouthwashes, which can increase mucosal irritation.
• Concurrent use with systemic antifungal agents that may reduce the local efficacy of hexetidine.

Use with caution

• Co‑administration with topical corticosteroids in the mouth, as combined effects on mucosal healing are not well studied.
• Use alongside chlorhexidine preparations, which may increase the risk of oral irritation.
• Patients taking medications that cause dry mouth should monitor for increased discomfort when using Hexoral.
