Hexoral (Hexetidine)

Hexoral is used as a topical antiseptic for managing various minor conditions of the mouth and throat. Its antimicrobial activity helps reduce microbial load, alleviate symptoms, and promote healing of superficial lesions.

• Hexetidine exerts its antiseptic effect by integrating into microbial cell membranes, disrupting lipid bilayer integrity and increasing permeability. This leads to leakage of intracellular contents and inhibition of essential enzymatic processes, producing bacteriostatic and fungistatic activity without directly killing host cells. The result is a reduction in the proliferation of bacteria and fungi present in the oral cavity and helps maintain a balanced oral microbiome.

Hexoral is generally well tolerated when used as directed, but some users may experience mild or, rarely, more serious reactions.

Common

• Transient metallic or bitter taste in the mouth.
• Mild irritation or burning sensation of the oral mucosa.
• Temporary discoloration of the tongue or dental surfaces.
• Slight increase in salivation.
• Nausea or mild stomach upset if swallowed in small amounts.
• Dry mouth sensation.
• Mild headache.

Serious

• Allergic contact dermatitis affecting the lips or oral cavity.
• Severe swelling of the tongue, lips, or throat (angioedema).
• Persistent ulceration or erosive lesions not improving with continued use.
• Respiratory difficulty or wheezing.
