• Hexetidine exerts its antiseptic activity by integrating into the lipid bilayer of microbial cell membranes. This incorporation disrupts membrane integrity, leading to increased permeability and loss of essential intracellular constituents. The resulting impairment of cellular metabolism produces a bacteriostatic effect against Gram‑positive and Gram‑negative bacteria and a fungistatic effect against yeasts such as Candida species. The action is localized to the site of application and does not involve systemic absorption.

Adverse reactions to Hextril are generally mild and limited to the area of application, but rare serious events have been reported. Typical onset is within minutes of use and symptoms usually resolve spontaneously after discontinuation. Persistent or worsening reactions should prompt medical evaluation.
