Hexyon (Haemophilus Influenzae Type B Polysaccharide (Polyribosylribitol Phosphate), Diphtheria Toxoid, Teta)

Hexyon is used to actively immunise individuals against five serious infectious diseases as part of routine childhood vaccination programs.

• Diphtheria, providing protection by stimulating antibodies against diphtheria toxin.
• Tetanus, inducing immunity to tetanus neurotoxin.
• Pertussis (whooping cough), generating antibodies to pertussis antigens.
• Poliomyelitis, preventing infection with inactivated poliovirus types.
• Haemophilus influenzae type b disease, reducing risk of invasive Hib infections.

• Hexyon contains purified antigens from diphtheria toxin, tetanus toxin, pertussis bacteria, inactivated poliovirus, and the polysaccharide capsule of Haemophilus influenzae type b. After intramuscular injection, antigen‑presenting cells process these components and present them to T‑cells, which activate B‑cells to produce specific antibodies. The resulting humoral and cellular immune responses generate immunological memory, enabling rapid neutralisation of the respective toxins or pathogens upon future exposure.

Following vaccination with Hexyon, some recipients experience mild to moderate reactions, while rare serious events may occur.

Common

• Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site.
• Low‑grade fever lasting 1–2 days.
• Irritability or fussiness in infants.
• Mild headache or fatigue.

Serious

• Anaphylactic or severe allergic reaction.
• Seizure (rarely reported).
• High fever with rash.
• Persistent crying or inconsolable distress.

Healthcare providers should assess individual health status before administering Hexyon and follow recommended guidelines.

• Contraindicated in persons with a known severe allergy to any vaccine component.
• Postpone vaccination in individuals with moderate or severe acute illness.
• Use caution in immunocompromised patients, as response may be reduced.
• Pregnancy status should be evaluated; safety data are limited.
• Monitor for signs of anaphylaxis for at least 15 minutes after injection.
• Do not co‑administer with live vaccines in the same visit.

Hexyon may interact with other medical products; certain combinations should be avoided or used with caution.

Avoid

• Simultaneous administration with live attenuated vaccines (e.g., measles‑mumps‑rubella) in the same injection site.
• Concurrent use of immunoglobulin or blood products that could interfere with vaccine efficacy.

Use with caution

• Administration with other inactivated vaccines may be spaced according to schedule.
• Patients receiving immunosuppressive therapy may have diminished antibody response.
• Antipyretics may mask fever, but are generally acceptable for symptom relief.
