Hibidil (Chlorhexidine Gluconate)

Hibidil is indicated for several external skin applications where microbial control is required.

• Skin antisepsis before minor procedures.
• Pre‑operative skin preparation for surgical sites.
• Cleansing of superficial wounds and abrasions.
• Reducing bacterial colonization on intact skin prior to catheter insertion.
• Disinfection of skin prior to intravascular device placement.

• Chlorhexidine gluconate exerts its antiseptic effect by binding to negatively charged bacterial cell walls and disrupting membrane integrity. The cationic molecule penetrates the lipid bilayer, causing leakage of intracellular contents and precipitating cytoplasmic proteins. This loss of membrane function leads to rapid bacterial cell death and provides a persistent antimicrobial surface activity that remains effective after the solution dries on the treated area.

Topical application of Hibidil may be associated with local skin reactions, most of which are mild and transient.

Common

• Mild skin irritation or erythema.
• Transient itching or burning sensation.
• Dryness or peeling of the treated area.

Serious

• Allergic contact dermatitis with vesiculation.
• Severe skin ulceration or necrosis (rare).
• Systemic hypersensitivity reactions such as urticaria or anaphylaxis (extremely rare).

When using Hibidil, certain precautions help minimize adverse reactions and ensure safe application.

• Do not apply to mucous membranes, eyes, or internal body cavities.
• Avoid use on large surface areas or broken skin unless directed by a healthcare professional.
• Test a small skin area first if a sensitivity reaction is suspected.
• Keep the product out of reach of children; accidental ingestion may cause gastrointestinal irritation.
• Discontinue use and seek medical advice if signs of an allergic reaction develop.
• Store at room temperature, protected from light and moisture.

Chlorhexidine can interact with certain substances that may affect its efficacy or increase irritation risk.

Avoid

• Concurrent use with topical products containing alcohol, peroxide, or other antiseptics that may cause chemical incompatibility.
• Application over dressings impregnated with iodine or silver, which can reduce antimicrobial activity.

Use with caution

• Use with other skin‑care products (e.g., moisturizers) only after the Hibidil film has dried to prevent dilution.
• Caution when using near medical devices (e.g., catheters) that contain latex, as chlorhexidine may degrade latex.
