Hibidil (Chlorhexidine Gluconate)

Hibidil is used for external antiseptic purposes on intact or partially damaged skin.

• Chlorhexidine gluconate exerts its antiseptic effect by binding to negatively charged bacterial cell walls and disrupting membrane integrity. The cationic molecule penetrates the lipid bilayer, causing leakage of intracellular contents and precipitation of cytoplasmic proteins. This leads to rapid bacteriostatic activity at low concentrations and bactericidal activity at higher concentrations against a broad range of Gram‑positive and Gram‑negative organisms, as well as some fungi and viruses.

Topical application of Hibidil may cause local skin reactions; most are mild and reversible, while rare events can be more serious.

Common

• Mild skin irritation or erythema at the application site
• Transient itching or burning sensation
• Dryness or peeling of the treated skin
• Temporary discoloration (yellowing) of the skin

Serious

• Allergic contact dermatitis with vesiculation
• Severe skin ulceration or necrosis
• Systemic hypersensitivity reactions such as urticaria
• Anaphylactic shock (extremely rare)

When using Hibidil, certain precautions help minimize adverse reactions and ensure safe application.

• Do not apply to mucous membranes, eyes, or open cavities
• Avoid use on large surface areas or broken skin unless directed by a healthcare professional
• Discontinue use if signs of allergic reaction appear
• Keep the product out of reach of children and store at room temperature
• Do not use on patients with known hypersensitivity to chlorhexidine
• Avoid simultaneous use with other topical antiseptics unless advised
• Consult a physician before use during pregnancy or lactation (safety not established)

Chlorhexidine can interact with certain substances; awareness of these interactions helps prevent reduced efficacy or increased irritation.

Avoid

• Concurrent application with iodine‑based antiseptics
• Use with topical products containing alcohol or peroxide that may cause irritation
• Application over dressings impregnated with silver or other antimicrobial agents that may inactivate chlorhexidine

Use with caution

• Use together with other skin‑sensitizing agents in patients with a history of dermatitis
• Co‑administration with systemic antibiotics does not require dose adjustment but monitor for overlapping allergic potential
