Hidrasec Baby (Racecadotril)

Hidrasec Baby is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhea in infants and young children. It may be used as part of rehydration therapy to reduce stool frequency and volume.

• Racecadotril acts as an enkephalinase inhibitor, preventing the breakdown of endogenous enkephalins in the intestinal mucosa in the gut. Elevated enkephalin levels activate opioid receptors that reduce chloride and water secretion into the lumen and modestly significantly slow intestinal motility. This dual effect limits fluid loss and stool output, addressing the primary pathophysiology of acute secretory diarrhea without affecting systemic opioid pathways.

Like most antidiarrheal agents, Hidrasec Baby may cause adverse reactions, most of which are mild and transient.

Common

• Mild abdominal discomfort or bloating, usually resolving within a day.
• Nausea or occasional vomiting, often mild.
• Transient headache that does not require treatment.
• Slight increase in constipation, especially if fluid intake is low.

Serious

• Allergic skin rash or urticaria, indicating possible hypersensitivity.
• Severe abdominal pain that persists beyond the diarrheal episode.
• Persistent vomiting leading to dehydration, requiring medical attention.
• Signs of anaphylaxis such as facial swelling, throat tightness, or difficulty breathing.

• Verify that the child is older than the age specified on the product label.
• Confirm that diarrhea is acute and not associated with blood, fever, or severe abdominal pain.
• Do not use if the child has a known hypersensitivity to racecadotril or any excipients.
• Ensure adequate oral rehydration therapy is maintained alongside the medication.
• Consult a healthcare professional if diarrhea persists longer than 48–72 hours.
• Avoid use in children with chronic gastrointestinal disorders without medical advice.

Hidrasec Baby may interact with other medicines, and certain combinations should be avoided or used with caution.

Avoid

• Concurrent use of other opioid receptor agonists that may amplify central effects.
• Antidiarrheal agents containing loperamide when combined may increase risk of constipation.
