Hidrasec Effect (Racecadotril)

Hidrasec Effect is indicated for the symptomatic relief of acute, non‑bloody diarrhea in adults and children. It is used as a short‑term, self‑care measure to reduce stool frequency and volume.

• Racecadotril is a peripheral enkephalinase inhibitor. By blocking the enzyme that degrades endogenous enkephalins, the drug increases the concentration of these peptides in the intestinal mucosa. The elevated enkephalins activate opioid receptors on enteric neurons, which reduces secretion of water and electrolytes into the lumen and modestly slows intestinal motility, thereby decreasing stool output in acute diarrhoea without producing central opioid effects.

Like most antidiarrheal agents, racecadotril may cause unwanted effects. Reported reactions are grouped by frequency and severity.

Common

• Mild abdominal discomfort or cramping.
• Nausea or occasional vomiting.
• Headache or dizziness.
• Transient skin rash or itching.
• Dry mouth.
• Unpleasant taste sensation.

Serious

• Allergic reactions such as swelling of the face, lips, or tongue.
• Severe rash with blistering (Stevens‑Johnson‑like presentation).
