Hidrasec (Racecadotril)

Hidrasec is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhea in patients who require reduction of intestinal fluid loss.

• Racecadotril is a pro‑drug that is rapidly converted to thiorphan, an inhibitor of the enzyme neutral endopeptidase (enkephalinase) in the intestinal mucosa. By blocking enkephalinase, endogenous enkephalins are preserved, leading to activation of opioid receptors on enteric neurons. This reduces secretion of chloride and water into the intestinal lumen and slows intestinal motility, thereby decreasing the volume and frequency of diarrheal stools.

Like many antidiarrheal agents, Hidrasec may cause unwanted effects, most of which are mild and transient. These events are generally self‑limiting and resolve without medical intervention, but patients should be aware of signs that require prompt evaluation.

Common

• Mild abdominal discomfort or cramping, which usually resolves within a day.
• Nausea, occasional vomiting, or a transient loss of appetite.
• Headache or dizziness that is brief and does not interfere with daily activities.
• Flatulence or mild constipation, often self‑limiting.

Serious

• Allergic skin reactions such as rash, urticaria, or swelling of the face, throat, or tongue, which may indicate anaphylaxis.
• Severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or signs of severe dehydration that require immediate medical attention.

When using Hidrasec, certain precautions should be observed to ensure safe and effective use.

• Verify that diarrhea is acute and not caused by chronic gastrointestinal disease before starting therapy.
