Hidrasec (Racecadotril)

Hidrasec is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhea in adults and children. It is used as an adjunct to rehydration therapy to reduce stool frequency and volume. The medication may be considered when rapid control of diarrheal output is desired. It is not intended for chronic diarrheal conditions or for use in patients with known hypersensitivity to racecadotril.

• Racecadotril acts as a peripheral enkephalinase inhibitor. By blocking the enzyme that degrades endogenous enkephalins, it increases the local concentration of these peptides in the intestinal mucosa. The elevated enkephalins bind to opioid receptors on enteric neurons, reducing cyclic AMP levels and consequently decreasing chloride and water secretion into the intestinal lumen, which helps to limit stool output.

Adverse reactions to Hidrasec are generally mild, but patients should be aware of possible side effects.

• Nausea

Serious

• Allergic skin reactions (rash, urticaria)
• Severe hypersensitivity (angioedema, anaphylaxis)
• Persistent vomiting that interferes with oral intake

• Before starting Hidrasec, consider the following safety points. The medication should be used with caution in patients with known hypersensitivity to racecadotril or any excipients. Its safety in pregnancy and lactation has not been established, so a risk‑benefit assessment is required. Use is not recommended for chronic diarrheal disorders without medical supervision. Monitor for signs of dehydration, especially in children and the elderly. Discontinue if severe allergic reactions occur. Consult a healthcare professional if diarrhea persists beyond 48‑72 hours.

Avoid
