Hidrasec (Racecadotril)

Hidrasec is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of acute, non‑invasive diarrhea.

• Adults and adolescents with sudden onset watery diarrhea.
• Children over six months experiencing acute diarrheal episodes.
• Adjunct to oral rehydration therapy to reduce stool output.
• Situations where rapid reduction of intestinal secretion is desired, such as travel‑related diarrhea.

• Racecadotril is a pro‑drug that is converted to thiorphan, a potent inhibitor of intestinal enkephalinase. By blocking this enzyme, endogenous enkephalins are preserved, leading to activation of opioid receptors in the gut wall. This reduces the release of secretagogues, decreases chloride and water secretion into the intestinal lumen, and modestly slows intestinal motility, thereby limiting stool volume without affecting absorption in the short term.

Like many antidiarrheal agents, Hidrasec may cause unwanted effects, most of which are mild and transient.
