Hirudoid (Chondroitin Polysulfate)

Hirudoid is used externally to manage minor vascular and traumatic skin conditions where reduced clot formation and inflammation are desired.

The formulation is applied directly to the affected area, where it penetrates the skin to exert local antithrombotic and anti‑inflammatory actions without systemic exposure.

• Chondroitin polysulfate acts as a glycosaminoglycan that interferes with the coagulation cascade when applied to the skin. It binds to antithrombin and reduces the activity of thrombin and factor Xa, limiting fibrin formation locally. In parallel, the molecule modulates inflammatory mediators by decreasing leukocyte adhesion and cytokine release, which together produce a localized antithrombotic and anti‑inflammatory effect without appreciable systemic absorption.

Topical application of Hirudoid may be associated with local skin reactions and, rarely, more serious adverse events.

Common

• Mild skin irritation or redness at the application site.
• Itching or mild pruritus.
• Dryness or peeling of the treated skin.
• Transient burning sensation during application.
• Slight swelling or edema at the treated area.
• Temporary discoloration (hyperpigmentation) that resolves after discontinuation.
• Localized itching that intensifies after repeated applications.

Serious

• Allergic contact dermatitis characterized by extensive rash and swelling.
• Severe skin ulceration or necrosis at the site of use.
• Systemic hypersensitivity reactions such as urticaria or angioedema (very rare).
• Development of systemic coagulation abnormalities (extremely rare).

When using Hirudoid, certain precautions should be observed to minimize the risk of adverse reactions and ensure appropriate use.

• Do not apply to broken skin, open wounds, or mucous membranes.
• Avoid use on infected or inflamed areas unrelated to the indicated condition.
• Discontinue the product if signs of allergic reaction appear, such as rash or swelling.

Avoid
