Hirudoid (Chondroitin Polysulfate)

Hirudoid is indicated for several superficial vascular and inflammatory skin conditions. It is commonly used to manage the following:

• Superficial thrombophlebitis, including painful vein inflammation.
• Bruising (contusions) and associated discoloration.
• Hematoma formation after trauma.
• Localized edema and inflammation of the skin and subcutaneous tissue.
• Minor skin injuries where reduced swelling and improved healing are desired.

• Chondroitin polysulfate in Hirudoid acts as a heparinoid, mimicking the activity of heparin. When applied topically, it interferes with the coagulation cascade by inhibiting thrombin and factor Xa formation, reducing fibrin deposition. Simultaneously, it modulates inflammatory pathways by decreasing leukocyte adhesion and limiting the release of pro‑inflammatory mediators, leading to reduced swelling and pain at the site of application.

Adverse reactions to Hirudoid are generally mild, but some users may experience more serious effects.

Common

• Mild skin irritation or redness at the application site.
• Itching or a transient burning sensation.
• Dryness or peeling of the treated skin.
• Localized rash.

Serious

• Allergic contact dermatitis with swelling and blistering.
• Severe skin ulceration or necrosis (rare).
• Systemic hypersensitivity reactions such as urticaria.
• Persistent edema unrelated to the original condition.

When using Hirudoid, consider the following safety measures:

• Avoid application on broken, infected, or ulcerated skin.
• Do not use on large surface areas for prolonged periods without medical guidance.
• Discontinue use if signs of allergic reaction develop.
• Consult a healthcare professional before use during pregnancy or lactation.

• Store at room temperature, protected from excessive heat and direct sunlight.

Topical chondroitin polysulfate may interact with other agents applied to the skin or systemic anticoagulants.

Avoid

• Application over areas treated with systemic anticoagulant therapy without physician advice.
