Hirudoid (Chondroitin Polysulfate)

• Chondroitin polysulfate is a sulfated glycosaminoglycan that exerts anti‑inflammatory and anti‑edematous actions when applied to the skin. It interferes with the synthesis and activity of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes, stabilises cell membranes, and enhances microcirculatory blood flow. The resulting reduction in vascular permeability limits fluid accumulation and promotes resorption of extravasated blood, thereby decreasing swelling and bruising.

Topical application of Hirudoid may cause skin reactions, most of which are mild and reversible.

Common

• Mild erythema at the application site.
• Pruritus or itching.
• Slight burning or stinging sensation.
• Dryness or peeling of the treated skin.

Serious

• Severe allergic dermatitis (eczema‑like rash).
• Contact urticaria (hives).
• Angio‑edema involving face or lips.
• Stevens‑Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis (rare).

Before using Hirudoid, consider the following precautions to minimize risks and ensure appropriate use.

• Do not apply to broken, infected, or ulcerated skin.
• Avoid use on mucous membranes, eyes, or genital areas.

Hirudoid is a topical agent, but certain co‑applications may affect its safety or efficacy.

Avoid

• Concurrent use with other topical irritants (e.g., strong antiseptics, alcohol‑based solutions).
