Hirudoid (Chondroitin Polysulfate)

Hirudoid is indicated for several superficial skin and subcutaneous conditions where localized blood clotting or inflammation is present.

• Superficial thrombophlebitis (inflammation of small veins near the skin surface)
• Bruising (contusions) resulting from minor trauma
• Hematoma formation in subcutaneous tissue
• Post‑operative or post‑traumatic swelling where micro‑vascular leakage occurs
• Small vessel congestion following cosmetic procedures

• Chondroitin polysulfate exerts its effect by binding to plasma proteins and endothelial surfaces, where it interferes with the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin. This inhibition reduces fibrin formation and limits clot development in the superficial venous plexus. In addition, the molecule modulates inflammatory mediators, decreasing leukocyte activation and cytokine release, which together produce antithrombotic and anti‑inflammatory actions on the skin.

Adverse reactions to Hirudoid are generally mild but can include more serious events.

Common

• Mild skin irritation at the application site
• Transient redness or warmth
• Slight itching or tingling sensation
• Dryness or flaking of the treated skin
• Temporary discoloration of the skin

Serious

• Allergic contact dermatitis with vesiculation
• Severe skin necrosis or ulceration
• Systemic hypersensitivity reactions such as urticaria
• Unexpected bruising extension
• Persistent swelling not improving
• Thrombotic events in deeper vessels (rare)
• Development of secondary infection at the site

When using Hirudoid, certain precautions should be observed to minimize risk and ensure appropriate use.

• Avoid application on broken, infected, or severely irritated skin
• Do not use under occlusive dressings unless directed by a healthcare professional
• Keep the product away from eyes, mucous membranes and the oral cavity
• Discontinue use and seek medical advice if signs of an allergic reaction develop
• Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should consult a physician before use
• Children and elderly patients may be more sensitive to topical agents

Topical chondroitin polysulfate can interact with other agents applied to the same skin area or systemic drugs affecting coagulation.

Avoid

• Concurrent use with other topical antithrombotic or anticoagulant preparations (e.g., heparin creams)
• Application over areas treated with strong irritants or chemical peels

Use with caution

• Systemic anticoagulants (warfarin, direct oral anticoagulants) as additive antithrombotic effect may be theoretical
• Non‑steroidal anti‑inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) applied nearby, which may increase local irritation
