Hirudoid (Mucopolysaccharide Polysulfuric Acid Ester)

Hirudoid is indicated for several superficial vascular and inflammatory conditions where topical therapy is appropriate.

• Mild varicose vein discomfort.

• Mucopolysaccharide polysulfuric acid ester acts as a heparinoid that binds to endothelial surfaces, inhibiting coagulation factors such as thrombin and factor Xa. It also reduces the release of inflammatory mediators, stabilises capillary walls, and improves microcirculatory flow, which together facilitate the resorption of haematomas and limit local swelling.

Adverse reactions to Hirudoid are generally mild and limited to the site of application.

Common

• Transient skin redness or erythema.
• Mild itching or pruritus.
• Slight burning or stinging sensation.
• Dryness or peeling at the application area.

Serious

• Allergic contact dermatitis with vesiculation.
• Severe skin ulceration or necrosis (rare).
• Systemic hypersensitivity reactions such as urticaria.
• Persistent edema unrelated to the original condition.

Before using Hirudoid, consider the following safety points.

• Avoid application on open wounds, infected skin, or mucous membranes.
• Do not use if you have a known hypersensitivity to heparinoids or any ingredient in the gel.
• Consult a healthcare professional before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, as safety data are limited.
• Discontinue use if severe skin irritation or allergic signs develop.
• Keep the product out of reach of children; accidental ingestion should be avoided.
• Store at room temperature away from direct sunlight and moisture.

Topical Hirudoid has limited systemic absorption, but certain substances may affect its safety or efficacy.

Avoid

• Systemic anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin, direct oral anticoagulants) if large skin areas are treated.
• Non‑steroidal anti‑inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) applied topically nearby.
