Hjercatyl (Acetylsalicylic Acid)

• Acetylsalicylic acid exerts its pharmacologic effect by irreversibly acetylating the active site of cyclooxygenase‑1 (COX‑1) and cyclooxygenase‑2 (COX‑2) enzymes. This acetylation blocks the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandin H2, thereby reducing the synthesis of prostaglandins that mediate pain, fever, and inflammation, as well as thromboxane A2, which promotes platelet aggregation. The inhibition is dose‑dependent and persists for the lifespan of platelets, which is about 7‑10 days.
