Hjerdyl (Acetylsalicylic Acid)

Hjerdyl is indicated for several cardiovascular prevention strategies in patients at risk of thrombotic events.

• Prevention of first‑time myocardial infarction in high‑risk individuals.
• Prevention of ischemic stroke in patients with atherosclerotic disease.
• Secondary prevention of recurrent cardiovascular events after an acute coronary syndrome.

• Use in patients undergoing certain vascular surgical procedures to reduce peri‑operative clot formation.

• Acetylsalicylic acid irreversibly acetylates the cyclooxygenase‑1 (COX‑1) enzyme in platelets, blocking the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandin H2 and subsequently reducing thromboxane A2 production. The loss of thromboxane A2 impairs platelet activation and aggregation, providing a sustained antiplatelet effect that persists for the lifespan of the platelet (approximately 7‑10 days). Because platelets cannot synthesize new COX‑1, the inhibition is effectively permanent until new platelets are generated, which underlies its use in chronic prevention.

Like other antiplatelet agents, Hjerdyl may be associated with a range of adverse reactions, most of which are mild but some can be serious.

Common

• Minor gastrointestinal discomfort or dyspepsia.
• Nausea or mild stomach upset.
• Easy bruising or minor bleeding from cuts.
• Headache or dizziness.

Serious

• Gastrointestinal ulceration or bleeding.
• Severe hemorrhage, including intracranial or gastrointestinal.
• Allergic reactions such as rash, angioedema, or anaphylaxis.

• History of peptic ulcer disease or gastrointestinal bleeding.
• Known hypersensitivity to aspirin or other NSAIDs.
• Active bleeding disorders or concurrent anticoagulant therapy.

• Pregnancy, especially the third trimester, unless benefits outweigh risks.
• Children or teenagers with viral infections due to risk of Reye’s syndrome.

Hjerdyl can interact with other medications, altering its antiplatelet effect or increasing the risk of adverse events.

Avoid
