• Liquid paraffin is a mineral oil that is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. When ingested, it coats the surface of fecal material, creating a slippery layer that reduces friction and decreases water reabsorption across the intestinal mucosa. This lubrication and water‑retaining effect softens the stool and facilitates its transit through the colon, leading to a bowel movement without stimulating intestinal muscle activity.

Like other mineral oil laxatives, Hodernal may cause unwanted gastrointestinal or systemic reactions, most of which are mild and reversible.
