Holtoss (Bromhexine)

Holtoss (bromhexine) is indicated for conditions in which thick, tenacious mucus impairs normal airway clearance.

• Cough associated with thick sputum in acute or chronic bronchitis
• Respiratory tract infections where mucus viscosity is increased
• Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations with productive cough
• Post‑operative or post‑viral periods with mucus retention
• Situations where facilitating expectoration improves breathing comfort

• Bromhexine acts as a mucolytic by stimulating the serous cells of the bronchial epithelium to increase the production of thin, watery mucus. The drug also reduces the polymerization of mucopolysaccharide fibers, lowering sputum viscosity. By decreasing surface tension, bromhexine enhances ciliary activity and promotes more efficient clearance of secretions from the respiratory tract. These actions collectively improve mucociliary transport and facilitate expectoration.

Like other mucolytics, Holtoss may cause a range of adverse reactions, most of which are mild and transient.

Common

• Mild gastrointestinal discomfort such as nausea or dyspepsia
• Transient bitter taste in the mouth
• Slight increase in sputum production during the first doses
• Headache or mild dizziness

Serious

• Allergic skin reactions including rash, urticaria, or angio‑edema
