Hornhaut Entferner (Salicylic Acid)

Hornhaut Entferner is used primarily for the removal of thickened skin on the feet and hands.

• Salicylic acid acts as a keratolytic by penetrating the stratum corneum and disrupting the desmosomal connections between corneocytes. This chemical exfoliation weakens the intercellular cohesion, leading to dissolution of the keratin matrix in hyperkeratotic tissue. The result is a gradual softening and shedding of thickened skin layers, allowing easier removal of calluses and related lesions. The effect is concentration‑dependent and typically reversible after discontinuation.

Topical salicylic acid may cause skin reactions, most of which are mild and reversible.

Common

• Mild redness or erythema at the application site.
• Slight stinging or burning sensation during or after use.
• Dryness or flaking of the treated skin.
• Temporary peeling of superficial skin layers.
• Mild itching or tingling sensation localized to the treated area.
• Light discoloration or temporary darkening of the skin.

Serious

• Allergic contact dermatitis presenting with intense itching, swelling, and vesicles.
• Chemical burns or ulceration if applied to broken or inflamed skin.
• Systemic toxicity is rare but may occur with extensive application, leading to nausea, headache, or tinnitus.

When using Hornhaut Entferner, certain precautions help minimize irritation and ensure safe application.

• Apply only to intact, dry skin; avoid open wounds or fissures.
• Limit the amount to a thin layer covering the target area.
• Do not use on mucous membranes, genital skin, or irritated eczema.
• Keep the product away from eyes; rinse thoroughly with water if accidental contact occurs.
• Discontinue use if persistent redness, burning, or swelling develops.
• Store at room temperature away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.

Salicylic acid can interact with other topical agents or systemic medications, influencing absorption or increasing irritation risk.

Avoid

• Concurrent use with other keratolytic or exfoliating products (e.g., glycolic acid, urea) may cause excessive skin irritation.
• Application together with topical retinoids can increase the likelihood of dermatitis.
• Using on skin treated with strong corticosteroids may reduce the intended keratolytic effect.

Use with caution

• When combined with occlusive dressings, absorption may rise; limit exposure time.
• Patients on systemic salicylate therapy (e.g., aspirin) should monitor for signs of salicylate accumulation if large skin areas are treated.
