Humexlib (Chlorphenamine Maleate, Paracetamol)

Humexlib is indicated for the temporary relief of several common, non‑specific symptoms.

• Allergic rhinitis and hay fever symptoms such as sneezing, itching and runny nose.
• Nasal and sinus congestion associated with the common cold.
• Fever accompanying viral infections.
• Mild to moderate pain, including headache, toothache, muscle aches and menstrual discomfort.
• Relief of combined cold‑flu symptoms like sore throat and body aches.

• Chlorphenamine maleate acts as a first‑generation H1‑receptor antagonist, blocking histamine binding in peripheral tissues and thereby reducing vasodilation, increased vascular permeability and sensory nerve stimulation that cause allergic symptoms. Paracetamol exerts its antipyretic and analgesic effects primarily by inhibiting central cyclooxygenase enzymes, leading to decreased synthesis of prostaglandins involved in pain signalling and temperature regulation. The combined action provides both antihistaminic relief and fever/pain reduction in a single dose.

Like all medicines, Humexlib may cause unwanted effects, most of which are mild and transient.

Common

• Drowsiness or mild sedation.
• Dry mouth, throat or nasal passages.
• Nausea or mild stomach upset.
• Headache.

Serious

• Severe allergic reaction (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing).
• Rapid heartbeat or palpitations.
• Liver function abnormalities (elevated enzymes).
• Hallucinations or confusion (rare with high antihistamine exposure).

Before using Humexlib, consider the following precautions to minimise risk and ensure appropriate use.

• Avoid use if you have known hypersensitivity to chlorphenamine, paracetamol or any excipients.
• Use caution when operating machinery or driving, as drowsiness may impair alertness.
• Do not exceed the recommended daily amount of paracetamol from all sources to prevent liver injury.
• Consult a healthcare professional before use during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or in children under the recommended age.
• Patients with asthma, glaucoma, enlarged prostate, or urinary retention should discuss use with a clinician.
• Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of liver toxicity and enhance sedative effects.

Humexlib can interact with other medicines; some combinations should be avoided while others require careful monitoring.

Avoid

• Other paracetamol‑containing products (risk of overdose).
• Strong central nervous system depressants (e.g., benzodiazepines, opioids) that may increase sedation.
• Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) taken within 14 days, due to possible hypertensive reactions.
• Anticholinergic drugs that can exacerbate dry‑mouth and urinary retention.

Use with caution

• Anticoagulants such as warfarin, because paracetamol may affect INR.
• CYP450‑interacting drugs (e.g., carbamazepine, rifampicin) that may alter paracetamol metabolism.
• Alcohol, which can increase liver toxicity risk.
• Antihypertensive agents, as chlorphenamine may cause mild increases in blood pressure.
