Hurricaine (Benzocaine)

Hurricaine is indicated for temporary relief of mild to moderate oral discomfort caused by various conditions. It is applied directly to the affected mucosal area and begins to numb the site within minutes, helping patients manage symptoms during everyday activities.

• Relief of oral mucosal pain from minor injuries such as bites, cuts, or abrasions.
• Soothing of sore throat discomfort associated with viral infections or irritation.
• Temporary anesthesia for dental procedures that require surface numbing, such as scaling or minor extractions.
• Alleviation of discomfort from oral ulcerations, including aphthous (canker) sores.

• Benzocaine produces local anesthesia by reversibly binding to voltage‑gated sodium channels on neuronal membranes. This binding stabilizes the inactive state of the channel, preventing the influx of sodium ions required for depolarization. As a result, the generation and propagation of nerve impulses are blocked in the treated area, producing a temporary loss of sensation without affecting surrounding tissues and providing localized analgesia.

Adverse reactions to Hurricaine are generally mild, but rare serious events have been reported.

Common

• Mild burning or stinging sensation at the application site.
• Temporary redness or mild irritation of the oral mucosa.
• Slight swelling or edema localized to the treated area.
• Minor taste alteration or metallic taste.
• Mild headache associated with oral discomfort.

Serious

• Allergic reactions such as urticaria, angioedema, or anaphylaxis.
• Methemoglobinemia, a blood disorder that reduces oxygen delivery.
• Persistent numbness lasting longer than the expected duration.
• Severe mucosal ulceration or tissue necrosis.
• Systemic toxicity manifesting as dizziness or confusion.

Before using Hurricaine, consider the following precautions to minimize risk and ensure appropriate use.

• Do not apply to broken skin or extensive mucosal lesions without medical advice.
• Avoid use in children under two years of age unless directed by a healthcare professional.
• Limit the amount and frequency according to the product label to reduce systemic absorption.
• Discontinue use and seek medical attention if signs of allergic reaction appear.
• Do not use concurrently with other topical anesthetics containing benzocaine or similar agents.
• Store at room temperature, away from moisture and direct sunlight.
• Keep out of reach of children; accidental ingestion can be hazardous.

Avoid

• Concurrent use with other benzocaine‑containing products, which can increase the risk of methemoglobinemia.
