Hydrea (Hydroxycarbamide)

Hydrea is indicated for several hematologic conditions where reduction of abnormal cell proliferation is required.

• Hydroxycarbamide inhibits the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase, which is essential for converting ribonucleotides to deoxyribonucleotides. By limiting deoxyribonucleotide pools, the drug impairs DNA synthesis and repair in rapidly dividing cells. This reduction in DNA replication leads to cell cycle arrest, particularly affecting malignant or over‑producing hematopoietic cells, thereby exerting antineoplastic and myelosuppressive effects. The inhibition is dose‑dependent and reversible, and it does not directly target specific receptors, making its action broad across proliferating cell lines.

Like many antineoplastic agents, Hydrea may cause a range of adverse reactions, from mild to potentially serious.

Common
