Hydrocortison Ratiopharm (Hydrocortisone)

Hydrocortison Ratiopharm is indicated for several dermatologic conditions where inflammation and itching are present.

• Mild to moderate eczema (atopic dermatitis)
• Contact dermatitis
• Psoriasis plaques
• Seborrheic dermatitis
• Other inflammatory skin disorders as determined by a healthcare professional

• Hydrocortisone exerts its anti‑inflammatory effect by diffusing across cell membranes and binding to intracellular glucocorticoid receptors. The drug‑receptor complex translocates to the nucleus, where it interacts with glucocorticoid response elements, altering transcription of multiple genes. This results in decreased synthesis of pro‑inflammatory cytokines, prostaglandins, and leukotrienes, while promoting the production of anti‑inflammatory proteins, thereby reducing edema, erythema, and pruritus.

Topical hydrocortisone may cause local and, rarely, systemic adverse reactions.

Common

• Burning or stinging at the application site
• Mild skin irritation or redness
• Dryness or peeling of the treated area
• Pruritus worsening after initial use

Serious

• Skin atrophy or thinning with prolonged use
• Stretch marks (striae) formation
• Secondary bacterial, fungal or viral infection of the skin
• Hypersensitivity reaction such as contact dermatitis
• Systemic corticosteroid effects (e.g., adrenal suppression) when large areas are treated

When using Hydrocortison Ratiopharm, several safety considerations should be observed to minimize risks.

• Avoid application to broken, infected, or ulcerated skin unless directed by a clinician
• Limit use to the prescribed area and duration; prolonged treatment can increase the risk of skin atrophy
• Do not cover treated skin with occlusive dressings unless instructed, as this can enhance absorption
• Use caution in children, especially on large body surface areas
• Consult a healthcare professional before use during pregnancy or lactation
• Discontinue and seek medical advice if signs of an allergic reaction appear

Hydrocortison Ratiopharm can interact with other topical or systemic agents, affecting its efficacy or safety.

Avoid

• Concurrent use of other potent topical corticosteroids on the same area
• Application of topical calcineurin inhibitors (e.g., tacrolimus) without a washout period
• Use with systemic corticosteroids when large skin areas are treated, increasing systemic exposure

Use with caution

• Antifungal or antibacterial creams that may irritate the skin
• Skin products containing alcohol, menthol, or other irritants
• Phototherapy or UV exposure, which may increase skin sensitivity
• Use with retinoids, as combined irritation risk may rise
