Hydrogen peroxide is a topical oxidizing antiseptic used for surface decontamination of skin and mucous membranes.

• Hydrogen peroxide acts as an oxidizing agent that rapidly releases free oxygen radicals upon contact with tissues. These radicals attack microbial cell membranes, oxidize lipids and denature proteins, leading to loss of cellular integrity and death of bacteria, viruses, fungi and spores. The reaction is non‑specific, providing broad‑spectrum antimicrobial activity without requiring receptor binding.

Adverse reactions are generally related to the oxidative nature of the solution.

Common Side Effects
