Hygropax (Chlortalidone)

Chlortalidone is a thiazide-like diuretic used to manage conditions involving fluid overload and high blood pressure.

• Hypertension: lowers systolic and diastolic blood pressure by reducing plasma volume.
• Edema: promotes the excretion of excess fluid associated with heart, liver or kidney disease.
• Congestive heart failure: assists in controlling fluid retention and improving symptoms.

• Chlortalidone inhibits the Na⁺/Cl⁻ cotransporter in the distal convoluted tubule, decreasing sodium and chloride reabsorption. This leads to increased urinary excretion of sodium and water, a reduction in extracellular fluid volume, and consequently lower blood pressure and diminished tissue edema.

Chlortalidone may cause a range of adverse reactions, from mild to serious.

Common Side Effects

• Increased urination: frequent need to void.
• Electrolyte imbalance: low potassium or sodium levels.
• Dizziness or light‑headedness, especially on standing.
• Headache.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Electrolytes: check serum potassium and sodium before initiation and during therapy.
• Gout history: be aware that uric acid levels may rise, potentially triggering attacks.
• Diabetes mellitus: monitor blood glucose as diuresis can affect glycemic control.
• Pregnancy: safety not established; use only if potential benefit justifies risk.
• Store at ambient temperature: keep in the original container, protect from moisture and direct sunlight.
