Hylaton (Chlortalidone)

Hylaton, a thiazide‑like diuretic, is used to manage conditions involving excess fluid or elevated blood pressure.

• Hypertension: lowers systolic and diastolic pressure to reduce cardiovascular risk.
• Edema associated with heart failure: promotes fluid loss to relieve pulmonary and peripheral congestion.
• Edema due to renal disease: enhances sodium and water excretion when kidney function is impaired.
• Edema due to liver cirrhosis: reduces ascites and peripheral swelling by increasing urinary output.

• Chlortalidone inhibits sodium‑chloride reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubule of the nephron. By blocking the Na+/Cl‑ cotransporter, it increases urinary excretion of sodium and water, leading to a reduction in extracellular fluid volume and a decrease in peripheral vascular resistance, which together lower blood pressure and alleviate edema.

Adverse reactions may occur with chlortalidone therapy.

Common Side Effects

• Increased urination: more frequent need to void.
• Electrolyte imbalance (low potassium): may cause muscle weakness or cramps.
• Dizziness or light‑headedness, especially on standing.
• Headache: mild to moderate intensity.
• Fatigue or general weakness.
• Elevated blood glucose: may affect diabetic control.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Severe dehydration or hypovolemia.
• Hyponatremia or severe electrolyte disturbances.

• Pancreatitis: abdominal pain with elevated enzymes.
