Hyprosan (Hypromellose)

Hyprosan is an ophthalmic lubricating agent that acts on the ocular surface to maintain moisture and protect tissue.

• Dry Eye Syndrome: alleviates discomfort by stabilising the tear film.
• Post‑operative ocular care: protects the cornea after eye surgery and reduces friction.
• Contact lens discomfort: improves lens tolerance by providing a moist coating.

• Hypromellose is a high‑molecular‑weight cellulose derivative that, when applied to the eye, creates a viscous, mucoadhesive film on the corneal and conjunctival epithelium. This film retains natural tears, reduces friction between eyelids and the ocular surface, and acts as a barrier against environmental irritants, thereby enhancing ocular comfort and protection.

Hyprosan may cause ocular reactions in some patients.

Common Side Effects

• Transient blurred vision: temporary visual disturbance after instillation.
• Mild eye irritation: slight burning or stinging sensation.
• Temporary redness: mild conjunctival hyperemia.
• Increased tear production: watery eyes shortly after use.
• Foreign body sensation: feeling of something in the eye.
• Mild itching: slight pruritus of the ocular surface.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Allergic reaction: swelling, rash, or hives around the eye.
• Severe eye pain: intense discomfort requiring medical evaluation.
• Vision loss: sudden decrease in visual acuity.
• Corneal ulcer: ulceration of the cornea.
• Persistent inflammation: ongoing conjunctivitis or keratitis.
• Hypersensitivity keratopathy: severe corneal inflammation.

Before using Hyprosan, consider the following precautions.

• Assess patient history: verify any known hypersensitivity to hypromellose or ophthalmic excipients.
• Avoid use in active eye infection: do not apply unless directed by a clinician.
• Contact lens compatibility: remove lenses before instillation unless the product is labeled lens‑compatible.
• Monitor for allergic signs: discontinue if rash, swelling, or severe irritation occurs.
• Store at room temperature: keep in the original container, protect from light and moisture.
