Hyprosan (Hypromellose)

Hyprosan is an ophthalmic lubricant that acts on the tear film to alleviate ocular surface dryness and irritation.

• Hypromellose is a high‑molecular‑weight cellulose derivative that increases the viscosity of the tear film. When applied to the eye, it adheres to the corneal and conjunctival epithelium, forming a protective, lubricating layer that reduces friction, stabilizes the tear film, and helps maintain ocular surface integrity.

Hyprosan may cause ocular side effects, most of which are mild and transient.

Common Side Effects

• Transient blurred vision: temporary visual haziness after instillation.
• Mild eye irritation: slight burning or stinging sensation.
• Foreign body sensation: feeling of something in the eye.
• Temporary redness: mild conjunctival hyperemia.

• Severe eye pain: intense discomfort requiring medical attention.
• Sudden vision loss: abrupt decrease in visual acuity.
• Corneal edema: swelling of the cornea.
• Ocular infection: signs of bacterial or fungal involvement.

Before using Hyprosan, consider the following precautions to ensure safe and effective use.

• Assess severity: evaluate the degree of dry eye or irritation before initiating therapy.
• Hypersensitivity: avoid if the patient has known allergy to hypromellose or any excipients.
• Contamination check: do not use if the solution appears discolored, cloudy, or contains particles.
• Persistent symptoms: seek ophthalmic evaluation if discomfort continues beyond 7 days.
• Contact lens wearers: remove lenses before instillation and re‑insert after the solution is absorbed.
• Store at ambient temperature: keep below 25 °C in the original container, protect from moisture and light.

Hyprosan has a low potential for drug interactions, but certain practices should be observed.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

• Simultaneous eye drops: avoid administering other ophthalmic solutions at the same time, as they may dilute each other.
• Preservative‑containing solutions: concurrent use with preservative‑rich drops may increase irritation.
